We want to update our 1980s home, but don’t know where to spend the money. We’ll probably be living in the home for four more years, but resale isn’t our only concern – we also want to enjoy it.
The most popular room to remodel is the kitchen, and it’s also the room that will give you one of the highest returns on your investment. Not surprising, for many it’s the most important room in the home. Today’s kitchens are used not only for cooking and eating, but also for gathering and entertaining. The kitchen has become the focal point in many homes.

Yes, we’d enjoy a new kitchen, but won’t it be very disruptive?
No question about it, it can be a huge disruption to the homeowner. But the finished product will quickly erase the brief inconvenience. Planning is key to an efficient and successful remodel. Start by thinking about your lifestyle and identifying your main objectives. Make a prioritized list of your needs and wants. Look in magazines and collect pictures of what you like. Think about the traffic flow and how you will use your kitchen. Write it all down. Then figure out how much you want to spend. The more information you can give to your remodeler, the better your expectations will be met. Next, research the products available. Be realistic. A lesser amount, spent well, will give you better results and enjoyment than a poorly planned, expensive kitchen.

Ok, we’ve seen some great kitchen ideas and it could be fun researching all the options. But, how do we choose a contractor to do the work?
Do your homework. You will save money by doing the job right the first time. Remember, when you hire a remodeler, you are buying a service rather than a product. The quality of the remodeler’s service will show in the finished product and your satisfaction with it. Seek referrals from friends and neighbors who have had remodeling work done. Ask questions. Does the remodeler carry insurance, are they licensed, have they established a presence in the community, do they actively participate in a trade organization and demonstrate a commitment to professionalism through continuing education and certifications? Ask for references from former customers as well as trade partners and suppliers to see if they have a strong network of trade contractor affiliates and have established a good credit reputation.

Any other advice?
Don’t forget to have fun. If you take the time upfront to plan and hire a reputable remodeler who assembles the right team of trade partners and designer for your project, it can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences of your life.
